DOHA: Qatar will be hosting the 10th edition of Qatar International Fencing Championship – Grand Prix 2013 for Men and Women in Epee - from January 18 to 21 at the Indoor Hall of Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence.
Hosts Qatar Fencing Federation (QFF) has been organising the Grand Prix since 2005 in accordance with Federation Internationale D’Escrime (FIE).
Around 300 athletes and officials from 41 countries are expected to arrive in Qatar for the championship, says a facebook status update from QFF.
The tournament is open for all fencers holding a FIE license for the 2013 season and also who have made a request for a license with the FIE.
The individual events will take place on January 20 while fencers will compete in the team’s events the next day.
In the individual events 64 fencers will be pitted against each other, in both the men’s and women’s section.
The total prize money in the men’s section in the individual event is $23,000, with the winner taking home $10,000 and the second place, while the two bronze medal winners will get $2,000.
Park Kyoung-Doo of South Korea won the individual championship last year here in Qatar.
Navarria Mara of Italy won the individual championship last year while collecting total prize money of $21,000 for her effort throughout the championship.
The number of fencers per country authorised to participate in this event will be in accordance with FIE regulations. Formula of the FIE Grand Prix Events is applicable to individual and teams events.
Meanwhile, hosts Qatar have announced their men’s and women’s teams for the event.
Ten local competitors will be in action in the men’s section and 11 of them in the women’s.
