To check the pollution, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) represented by the Environmental Monitoring Department  is developing an integrated environmental database which will help in preparing reports on environment condition of Qatar based on environmental indicators.

The Environmental Monitoring Department is also working on a key project to establish a national network for monitoring the quality of seawater round-the-clock in Qatar,” said Ahmed Mohammed Al Sada, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs at MME, while addressing the opening ceremony of a workshop on marine environment held yesterday at Al Najada Hotel.

Al Sada said that Qatar attached great importance to environment, sustainability and the quality of the marine environment following the global rising interest in environmental protection, which was clearly reflected in Qatar National Vision 2030 in the preservation of the environment for future generations. “The workshop will provide a platform to exchange of ideas which will lead to an understanding of the best ways in which we can improve the management of the quality of the marine environment in the country and identify the best practices and experiences in this regards,” he added.

Environmental Monitoring and Laboratory Department  at MME organised a regional workshop titled ‘Marine Environment: Monitoring and  Indicators’ in cooperation with the United Nations Environment’s West Asia Office (UNEP/ROWA) and the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME). Representatives from the State of Kuwait and of Oman, as well as international experts participated in the workshop.

Elias Allani, a representative of ROBME, highlighted the role of the Organization in coordinating among all Member States to unify efforts in the field of protection of the marine environment, referring to the meteorological station of the Organization, which was established in May 2008, which covers all the countries under ROBME.

Dr. Marwa Mohammed Al Ghanem, from Environmental Monitoring Department and Laboratory Department at MME, said the three day workshop will conclude on October 16. She said a number of topics will be discussed during the workshop including detection and monitoring of marine pollution using remote sensing technologies, systems of instant and continuous monitoring of environmental variables, indicators of the state of the marine environment.
