DOHA: Driven by the region’s growing demand for luxury yachts, Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar (NDSQ) is foraying into the yacht building sector. The Nakilat joint venture has already developed a state-of-the-art production yard at its QR3.5bn facilities in Ras Laffan.
“We have received a handful of orders for luxury yachts and giving final touches to the newly developed yard. The state-of-the-art yard is spacious enough to build multiple vessels at a time. The yard is capable of building up to a 120m long luxury yachts,” sources told The Peninsula yesterday.
The yacht-building yard has dedicated facilities to build luxury vessels up to 165m in length, in addition to building of yacht support vessels and the repair and conversion of mega yachts.
These facilities will include fully climate-controlled halls enabling interior and exterior finishing to the highest yachting standards.
Nakilat has also formed a joint venture with Keppel Offshore & Marine, a global leader in ship repair and conversions as well as offshore rig design, construction and repair.
The Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM), operates Nakilat’s ultra-modern ship repair yard for the repair and maintenance of very large LNG carriers and a wide range of other vessels, including the conversion of tankers to various configurations for offshore production, storage and off loading.
Talking on the sidelines of the name revealing ceremony of the newly launched load-out and recovery barge, Nakilat Managing Director Muhammad Ganam told The Peninsula the growing marine market is giving great opportunities to NDSQ’s facilities.
