NHRC Chairperson, H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah
Doha: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) celebrated World Human Rights Day, which is observed every year on December 10, the day the UN General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
World Human Rights Day 2022 comes under the theme “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All.”
NHRC Chairperson, H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah said that celebrating World Human Rights Day represents an exceptional event, both locally and internationally, in light of the international incidents making the world a global village.
She added that this year’s World Human Rights Day comes days after commemorating 20 years of establishing the NHRC amidst Qatar’s big strides toward protecting human rights, its relentless endeavor to establish a state of law and human rights, and its aspiration to achieve more dignity, freedom, justice, and equality for every human living on its soil.
Al Attiyah indicated that this year’s World Human Rights Day comes as Qatar is hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 with millions of multicultural and multilingual fans gathered together in respect, giving this year’s World Human Rights day more momentum making these people united under the human rights umbrella that encompasses everyone.
She also tressed that this global sporting event, being held for the first time in the Arab and Islamic region, besides the event’s humane nature and its concision with the occasion of World Human Rights Day, constitutes an opportunity to renew the firm commitment toward the human rights, its universality, and inclusivity as the pillars of the world where peace, development, tolerance, and respect for diversity and difference prevail.
Her Excellency also reiterated NHRC’s rejection of the false and misleading systematic malicious campaigns with the continued success of Qatar 2022, and that these campaigns contradict the reality and atmosphere experienced by the fans on the ground and contradict the statements of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and European Union officials who visited Qatar and witnessed the truth.
She renewed her call to international human rights organizations, including UN Special Rapporteurs and world parliament representatives, to witness the facts with transparency. The Chairperson noted Qatar’s welcome to UN or European missions, adding that all the UN and EU missions that visited Qatar praised the legislative advancement describing them as unprecedented.
Some European delegations stated that Qatar’s respect for human rights exceeds what they see in their European countries, adding that some European parliament representatives admitted that their countries do not have the same respect for human rights as what they witnessed in Qatar.
