Doha: Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie has announced the launch of an Integrated National Solid Waste Management Programme in Qatar.
“The programme targets an integrated development of all facilities and systems for collecting, transporting and managing solid waste until 2030 following principles of circular economy, Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Second National Development Strategy 2018-22,” said the Minister. He was addressing the opening ceremony of 2nd Waste Management Conference and Exhibition — Doha 2022 at Sheraton Hotel yesterday.
The two-day conference is being organised by the Ministry of Municipality to provide a platform for governmental, semi-governmental, private sector and local factories to communicate and exchange ideas and knowledge about waste management, treatment and recycling.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani, a number of Their Excellencies Ministers from Qatar, brotherly and friendly countries, Ambassadors, diplomats, heads and representatives of international organisations, local and international experts from waste management and recycling sector.
The Minister of Municipality said that Integrated National Solid Waste Management Programme also aims at educating people about the importance of rationalising all uses in order to reduce waste in general.
H E Dr. Al Subaie said that the programme will also help develop regulations and legislation related to waste sorting and recycling at the source for achieving the desired goal of zero waste and to stop landfills completely. “The Ministry has developed a comprehensive strategy to deal with all types of waste, and adopted a comprehensive plan through Integrated National Solid Waste Management Programme, which aims to establish an integrated infrastructure to manage solid waste activities,” said the Minister.
He said that the move also aims at reducing the volume of waste, strengthening the partnership with the private sector to invest in the solid waste management sector, as well as raising public awareness regarding reducing waste and the importance of recycling.
“To achieve these goals, a team was formed to bring about the best possible results for this program. International companies specialized in this field were also hired to support this team to implement the desired goals to preserve environmental integrity and achieve sustainable development and to use modern technologies to keep pace with growth of population, and economic development of the country,” said the Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie
He said that the conference comes in line with Qatar’s endeavor to reduce the waste, proper waste management and recycling to be a multi-use source for a number of products, industries and diverse businesses that serve the economy and contribute to preserving the environment.
The agenda of the conference includes presentations and panel discussions by more than 35 speakers and panelists, including officials, experts and managers of specialized companies.
During event many axes and topics related to waste management and recycling are discussed, the most important of which are: Qatar’s waste management strategy, modern laws and various legislations. In addition to presentations on modern technology for collecting and sorting at the source, landfills, reducing and treating food waste and panel discussions on the circular economy and initiatives, and the importance of participating ‘Zero Waste’ campaign.
The conference is also accompanied by a specialized exhibition in which more than 40 official bodies, companies and individuals are participating, offering their services and expertise.
The exhibition includes a corner to display artworks of some artists from Qatar, who submitted designs and artworks from recycled materials and as part of the ongoing awareness campaigns carried out by the Ministry of Municipality.
