Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) will further expand its services by opening its two branches at different locations this year while more than three branches will be opened subsequently, said Dr Sheikh Khaled bin Jabor Al Thani, Chairman of QCS.
“2018 was one of the most active years for QCS. We hosted many events, reached high number of people and worked closely with healthcare providers. To reach more people and extend our services, we will open two centres in Al Shamal and Al Wakra in 2019,” he said , while speaking to media persons on the sidelines of an event held recently to appreciate organisations and individuals who have supported QCS.
At present the headquarters of the QCS is situated within the Barwa Towers in Al Saad and it has no branch offices in the country.
One of the main goals of the QCS is to raise awareness about cancer, its prevention and early detection. QCS also provides financial support for cancer treatment.
The number of people benefit from QCS has increased tremendously over the years.
In 2013, the QCS provided financial support to 248 patients at a total cost of QR1.8m. The number gradually increased and reached 900 patients in 2018 at a cost of QR9m.
Some 73 educational activities were held in 2013 and it gradually increased over the years to 216 in 2018. It included workshops, awareness events, training programs, regional and international conferences.
The gradual increase in the number of activities and events has led to an increase in the number of beneficiaries from 3,650 beneficiaries in 2013 to 30,000 in 2018.
“In 2019 we hope to be more active and plan to host more events to increase awareness among the community about cancer prevention and importance of early detection,” said Dr Al Thani.
Several senior officials in the healthcare and private sector including Dr Mohammed Al Thani, Director of Public Health, Ministry of Public Health; Ali Al Khater, Chair of the Healthcare Communications Committee and Chief Communications Officer at Hamad Medical Corporation; and Dr Sheikha Abu Sheikha, Director, Cancer Screening Programme at Primary Health Care Corporation were presented at the QCS’s ‘Sponsors and Supporters Honoring Ceremony’ held at the Sharq Village and Spa. More than 35 organisations and individuals were appreciated during the event.
