DOHA: The first edition of  World GTL Congress got off  to a rousing start here yesterday in the presence of the  industry  leaders and market experts.

The three-day event has welcomed hundreds of gas-to-liquid (GTL) delegates from around the world to Doha.

Setting the tone for the opening day, the key note speakers, ranging from producers to end-users, explained their enthusiasm for GTL and its rapidly-expanding role in the global energy markets.

In his opening key note address, Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, Deputy Chairman of the QP Board of Directors and Managing Director of RasGas Company Ltd (RasGas), emphasised Qatar’s determination to continue the industry momentum.

Qatar has come a long way from the inception of its early plans to develop a GTL hub. Through two of the world’s largest GTL plants — Pearl and Oryx GTL — Qatar, in association with our partners Shell and Sasol, has achieved the vision of becoming the “GTL Capital of the World” and setting the benchmark for the GTL industry.

“With these plants averaging a combined production of more than 170,000 barrels per day of high quality GTL products, we are determined to keep the momentum going through sustaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency and reliability from both projects,” he said.

“This conference is an opportunity for stakeholders to engage with each other and to increase awareness about the innovation-driven GTL industry and the value it can provide,” said Abdulrahman Al Suwaidi, Chief Executive Officer, Oryx GTL in his address.

Oryx GTL has demonstrated that GTL can help address global energy security needs by producing cleaner, premium liquid fuels offering lower emissions at point of use.

“In Qatar, we are fortunate to have a highly supportive leadership, a stable operating environment, natural resource wealth and a commitment to developing high caliber human talent.

“With all the ingredients for success on our doorstep, it is now incumbent upon us more than ever before to repay the faith shown from all our partners and stakeholders, as we all work together for a profitable and sustainable future,” he said.

Wael Sawan, Managing Director and Chairman, Qatar Shell, said: “Pearl GTL has already produced 5.7 million tonnes of NGL’s and GTL products through the third quarter of 2012, making a positive impact at the bottom line, and is currently producing and selling all GTL products  from its product slate. This is a great achievement and Pearl is a one-of-a-kind asset. This contributed to yet another significant milestone — just last month — we celebrated the 100th GTL cargo from pearl during 2012.”

The World GTL Congress exhibition will be open to public today from 8am to 3pm.
