The season-opening meeting of the Wanda Diamond League, the Ooredoo Doha Meeting will be held in front of a full house at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium, the organisers announced yesterday.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Qatar Athletics Federation (QAF) President Mohammed Al Fadhala said that the tickets have been sold out and the fans are excited to watch a host of world class athletes in action at the prestigious meet tomorrow.

“There has been a huge demand for tickets and they have been sold out in all categories. I got in touch with the company handling sales and they’ve closed their counters. After two seasons with limited spectators, it’ll be a sold-out event this time. I’m looking forward to an exhilarating evening of action,” Al Fadhala said.

The opening round of the 13-leg series, the Ooredoo Doha Meeting will see more than 170 athletes from over 50 countries in action, including six track and field athletes from Qatar.

Fadhala also noted that the last edition of the competition was adjudged the best in the Diamond League series, and that the organising committee has put everything in place to ensure that this year’s event surpasses all the previous editions in all ramifications.

“Aside from organising the best in the series, it is our belief that the competition will also provide opportunities for young Qatari athletes to garner the much-needed experience which will further enhance their chances of competing in top-level competitions, including the World Championships,” the QAF President said.

Powered by Ooredoo as its Title Sponsor, the meeting will see seven reigning Olympic champions and a host of Olympic and world medallists in action in 14 Diamond League category events.

“We are delighted to be the Title Sponsor of the Doha edition of the Diamond League. Ooredoo is a company that is passionate about sports, and we have a long history of exciting partnerships with the Qatar Olympic Committee. We are always ready to lend our support to sports development in Qatar and the Doha Diamond League ranks high in this regard. We look forward to another great event on Friday," Sabah Rabiah Al Kuwari, Director of Public Relations at Ooredoo Qatar, said yesterday.

Tomorrow, the joint Olympic high jump champions Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi will lead a star cast which also includes Sweden’s Olympic pole vault champion and world record holder Mondo Duplantis and Olympic 200m champion Andre De Grasse of Canada, who will take on world champion Noah Lyles (USA).
