DOHA: Producing a powerful late burst of energy, Julian Smart-trained Ghizwan galloped to victory in the Doha Cup race yesterday as the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) here, where jockey Richard Mullen celebrated his 15th win of the season.
Ghizwan edged Maazouz by a length as the five-year-old celebrated his third win of the season with a time of 2:03:25.
Ridden by Alberto Sanna, Maazozu finished second while Mekhbhatt, who had Pier Convertino in the saddle, finished third in the 1800m race.
Earlier, Adrian Nicholls brought Emaad home with a slick run, winning race seven ahead of Glossy Posse and Go For Broke.
Nicholls enjoyed Emaad’s run as the four-year-old completed the win with a time of 1:55:09.
Ridden by Sanna, Glossy Posse finished three and a half lengths behind Emaad. Go For Broke, ridden by Marco, finished in third spot, nearly a length’s distance behind Glossy Posse in the 1800m race.
In race six, Convertino topped the field in the 1800m race, completing the win with Waddah, trained by A. de Mieulle.
Convertino won the race with a time of 2:03:42.
Qassy — with Harry Bentley in the saddle — finished the race in second spot while Bustawi Ismail-trained Saint De Faust completed the top three.
In a purposeful run with M Hussain-trained Succeed and Excel, Sanna posted an impressive win in race five.
Sanna topped the 1200m race on the dirt track ahead of The Scuttler, who was ridden by Convertino. Succeed and Excel clocked a time of 1:11:72.
Half Turn — ridden by Gerald Avranche — finished in third spot.
Convertino picked up his first win of the day when he guided Man Amongst Men to a
superb victory ahead of Bentley-ridden Bal De France and Goldenrod, who had Sanna, in the saddle.
Man Amongst Men clocked a time of 1:55:16 as Convertino finished the 1800m race one-and-a-half length ahead of Bal De France.
Popular British jockey Bentley topped the first two races with Waab and Silver Ranger respectively. In race three, Avranche was in the saddle when he guided Zameer to a worthwhile win in the 1200m run.
Today the riders converge at the QREC for the Losail Cup Day — the feature race that will be contested by 15 entries. Action begins at 4pm.
