Doha: The Doha Municipality last year conducted 31,000 campaigns to control insects and rodents in its jurisdiction, according to a senior official.
The municipality processed over 31,000 applications for controlling insects and rodents in government institutions and homes, said Abdullah Al Muhannadi, Head, Cleaning Section. Campaigns covered public institutions, schools, homes, military, police and civil defence camps.
The insect and rodent fighting unit at the municipality processed 16,530 applications for pest control and 1,180 for rodent control and visited 30,151 homes, said Al Muhannadi.
The unit also processed 98 applications for fighting snakes and 16 for fighting scorpions. The number of applications by the military, police and civil defence camps seeking insecticide services totalled 893.
During the summer months, the unit receives an average of 200 applications a day and in winter some 40, Al Muhannadi stressed. It has 15 vehicles with high quality equipment for spreading insecticides and 17 pick-ups for tackling rodents in Doha.
Al Muhannadi was speaking at the 16th media programme, ‘Meeting with official’ which is the first this year, organised by the Public Relations Department of the ministry and attended by Salman Al Marri, from the department, and officials from the media section.
Al Muhannadi said the pest control unit conducts regular campaigns in insect-breeding areas and regularly visits Suq Waqif. The number of visits to the market reached 3,655 last year.
He said the ministry uses the best quality of insecticides and best equipment for the safety of the users and environment protection. There are technical specifications set by the ministry for selection of insecticides, mainly imported from Western Europe, US, Canada, Australia and Japan.
He explained that one of the specifications is that insecticide must be used in the country of origin and accredited by an international organisation and specialised entities such as HSE in the US. The technical committees also choose every year one type of insecticide to diversify quality and prevent insects from acquiring immunity, he added.
On Sunday, the Department of Public Parks launched a week-long training workshop for inspectors of public parks to acquire judicial power after passing a written test at the end of the course. Inspectors’ role is to enforce the provisions of Law No. 32/1995 protecting public parks and prohibits felling trees or damaging plants or burning them or removing their leaves.
The law also prohibits setting fire in public parks or in the surrounding areas and throwing any kind of waste, especially industrial and construction waste. It specifies punishment of not less than three months’ jail term, fine not less than QR2,000 and not more than QR20,000 or either for violating the law.
