Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly and Related Meetings are an important platform for finding solutions to the many global issues. Karina Due, Member of the Danish Parliament, The Folketing, believes that solution to poverty, human rights, climate change, women empowerment and other such global issues lies in dialogue and exchange of ideas.

“This event is very important in addressing various global issues such as human rights, climate change and environment, poverty, terrorism, and women empowerment. The development in the countries are different. So we have to come together for dialogue,” said Due. “Events like this has a big impact in discussing issues with other countries and finding solutions. May be we can not solve a problem in short term, but even if we take baby steps in the long term it will definitely help in finding solutions in the long term,” she added.

In her 10 year long political career in Denmark, Karina Due has participated in many editions of IPU Assembly and Related Meetings.

“People in Denmark asked me why do you participate in such events because we are already there, but its very important for us that we have reached some of our goals and we should tell about it,” she added.  She is a strong supporter of women empowerment and advocates for giving equal opportunities to women.

“If we talk of women empowerment, the main problem is of equality. In Denmark we have equality and we all have same opportunities and that’s what we need. We cant say 50 percent of parliamentarians have to be women if they do not have access to education,” she said. “You have to ensure that every person, no matter what his or her colour or gender is, gets the same opportunities. We have to create opportunity for everybody and it is possible. Women can be just as good as men, you have to start by education,” she added.

She lauded Qatar’s efforts in hosting this high-profile event. “This edition of IPU was a very well-organised. Hosting this global event will help in spreading Qatar’s positive image across the world,” she said.
