More than 2,000 students visited Civil Defence pavilion in last three days at Darb El Saai, venue of official National Day celebration, to know about safety and security measures at homes and commercial complexes.
“Yesterday was only for families and we received many children and in last three days our pavilion has received more than 2,000 students. We are teaching students especially from primary schools how to use fire distinguisher especially in the first three minutes of fire because these minutes are called golden-minutes to control the fire,” First Lieutenant Abdulhadi Al Marri, Awareness and Media Officer at Civil Defence Department said.
He said another very important thing being taught to students was how to exit in cases of fire emergency at school or commercial complex and what they should do in case of heavy smokes. "They must be very close to ground to avoid smoke clouds because within three minutes of living in dense fire smoke may lead to death," he added.
“We teach all these things through simulator devices and every child must use fire extinguisher to control mock exercise and we are also distributing some awards to encourage them," Al Marri said. There is also some training for mothers and housemaids of how to use fire extinguishers at home in case of fire and the aim of the activity is to increase awareness among them about safety and security measures, he said.
“It is very important for us as mothers to have a chance of getting information on how to use fire extinguishers because only we and our housemaids are staying more at homes and may face such problems," Umm Abdulrahman said. "In addition to what we are providing to children, we also providing some books to winter campers related to required safety and security measures at camps."
The organising committee of Darb El Saai allocated more than 7,000 car parking and 70 car parking for people with disabilities, in addition to special parking for school buses. It also offered medical services and aids to visitors in case of any emergency cases. Many government and non-government entities and institutions have stalls in Darb El Saai. The Darb El Saai activities will continue until December 20.
