IPU Assembly an opportunity to learn

The ongoing 140th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly and related meeting in Doha are excellent platform parliamentarians to learn each to other. The enriching dialogues and conversations happening in IPU meetings help in improving the governance in countries.

“We have benefited a lot form IPU meetings. We came here with open mind to learn from other countries. We have learned very good experiences from other countries through dialogues and through debates. After interactions, we began to realise that we still have a lot of room for improvement,” Wangchuk Namgyel (pictured), Speaker of National Assembly of Bhutan, told The Peninsula. “Delegates from across the world have come here. They learn from each other and improve their systems back in their respective countries,” he added. 

He said that participation of record number of participants in this edition of IPU meetings has proved the success of this high profile event.

“Such kind of events help the deepening of democracy. It will further strengthen the structure of democracy and enrich the system,” said  Wangchuk Namgyel. “In such kind of meetings, we get to interact with many delegates here, which would not have been possible in usual circumstances. In these days of parliamentary democracy and internationalism, this kind of exposure is very beneficial for us,” he added

He praised hospitality offered by Qatar and arrangements made for this high profile event. This global event will help Qatar’s positive image across the world as parliamentarians from all over the globe has come to participate here.  “Qatar has made excellent arrangements for this IPU assembly. Overall arrangements regarding IPU are excellent,” he said. “Its my first time to visit Qatar, now we know the Qatari culture. This visit has showed us that Qatar is a very beautiful country. I think Qatar will really benefit by hosting this global event here,” he added.

The speaker said the successful hosting of this event is a confirmation that the football world cup in Qatar will be historic event. 

“After hosting 140th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly and related meeting successfully, I am quite confident that Qatar will also be able to organise football world cup in the best possible manner. We are also very happy that Qatar is the first Arab country to host the football world cup,” he said. 

He said that Qatar has huge potential to become a global hub for tourism.

“Qatar has a huge potential to become tourism hub because Qatari government has kept the country quite open. Because of its geographical location, it will be a tourist destination for global tourists. Qatar has so many excellent hotels. The country has rich culture and has people who are smiling and ready to help,” he added.
