Speaker of the National Assembly of Gambia, Mariam Jack Denton, said that she was very happy to be here in Qatar to participate in the 140th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) and related meetings.
“We were out of this activity for more than 15 years due to previous regime,” she said. Speaking to The Peninsula on the sidelines IPU meetings, she affirmed that Gambian parliament was delighted to be back to the IPU and participate effectively in its Assembly sessions. “We decided to come and meet our colleagues and share ideas with other parliamentarians on diverse issues especially on the ones which are hitting people in Africa hard,” she noted
“Qatar has done a lot and we congratulate the Shura Council of Qatar and Qatar government for their efforts to make this Assembly a success. The provided facilities made our meetings and tasks easy and thanks again for everyone here.”
She said that Gambia had the will to strength ties with Qatar at the government and parliamentary levels. “We also want to form a parliamentary friendship group to take ties to new heights,” she noted.
She said that the theme of 140th Assembly of the IPU that discussed the role of education in promoting peace was very important. “In Africa and in all other counties, education is the key of development and we can’t develop our societies, our countries without promoting education. Also among the priority issues for us is gender equality,” Mariam Jack Denton said.
Commenting on the speech of H H the Amir, the Speaker said: “We are sharing the same vision as mentioned in the speech of H H the Amir in terms of promoting education and peace around the world. If a country has education and peace it means it has inexhaustible source for development for present and coming generations.”
