Doha: Qatar has emerged as a permanent destination for over 300 types of migratory birds, thanks to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) for taking initiatives to provide suitable inhabitants during their presence in the country.

The figure has been released by the Ministry on the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) which falls on May 8. WMBD is an awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.

The day aims to draw attention to the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.

“Qatar is a major destination for migratory birds. Over 300 types of migratory birds, including endangered ones, migrate to Qatar every season,” the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has tweeted.

The Ministry said that Qatar’s efforts to preserve wildlife and habitats involves establishing protected and nature reserves to protect different ecosystems.

“World Migratory Bird Day 2021 is not simply a celebration of birds but a moment of reflection on our relationship with nature and our collective resolve to do more to protect birds and nature in a post-pandemic world,” the Ministry added.

The Ministry said that the theme of WMBD 2021 is ‘Sing, Fly, Soar – Like A Bird’ which is observed on second Saturday of May and second Saturday of October every year.

Qatar exerted great efforts to protect all types of migrating birds which pass through the country during the season. More parks, green areas and natural reserves were built allowing migrating birds to stay for a longer time.

A number of migrating birds have been spotted inhabiting in Qatar thanks to the environmental projects of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and regulations for hunting which help migrating birds find essential elements such as food, water, shelter, according to earlier report of the Ministry.

Many new birds are being spotted every year due to environmental projects implemented by the Ministry and protection provided by the environmental laws of the country. The measures taken by the Ministry help migrating birds find essential elements such as food, water, shelter when they passed by Qatar.

Al Karaana Lagoon, a major wildlife habitat with diverse species of birds and fish, which provides a green rest stop with clean water for migratory birds flocking over the country, is a best example of environmental project of the country apart from a number of natural reserves and protected areas which were declared to protect rear species of animals like Arabian Oryx and gazelles located in Al Sheehaniya and other places of the country.
