Doha: World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman has praised the sporting infrastructure in Qatar, saying the country has the potential to produce a world champion in the future.

The WBC President made these remarks during his visit to Qatar where he was welcomed by Sheikh Fahad bin Khaled Al Thani, President of Qatar Boxing Federation (QBF).

The WBC president visited the 3-2-1 Sports Museum that is located inside the Aspire Zone.

“This is a very impressive sports museum. I feel it is imperative for every sports fan to come and visit the 3-2-1 Sports Museum. It is truly a wonderful space for sports lovers,” Sulaiman said during his visit. “The museum is amazing,” he added.

He was later taken around the Aspire Academy, the world’s largest sports facility.

“I feel the athletes and players around the MENA region can hugely benefit by visiting the Aspire Academy. It is a sports hub in the real sense. I am impressed with my visit to Aspire Academy,” the WBC president said.

The QBC president was accompanied by the QBF president to the sports clubs in Doha where he met with boxing communities in Qatar. The visiting delegate was impressed with the boxing set-up in Qatar.

“I can see there is a genuine passion for boxing in particular and sports in general. With more participation and improved technical expertise, Qatar can have their world champion in 5-6 years time,” the WBC president said in his remarks.

“The WBC is hugely supportive of boxing growth in the MENA region. The facilities here are top-notch.

“It was always the vision of the late president Mr Jose Sulaiman who was always looking into different ways to develop the sport in the MENA region.

Recently there was a ME title formed. It will be a great platform for the Arab boxers to look to and create a path of excellence and become a world champion potentially,” he added.

“I like the boxing passion in Qatar. I thank QBF President Sheikh Fahad bin Khaled Al Thani for hosting me and showing me around Qatar’s magnificent sporting venues,” he said.

The QBF President thanked the WBC chief for visiting Qatar.

“We are honored to have the WBC president in Qatar. We hope to welcome him again in the future at one of our boxing championships,” Sheikh Fahad said.

“We are thankful to WBC president for his kind remarks about Qatar’s sporting excellence.”
