Ramallah: Palestinian Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Mustafa on Wednesday declared the Gaza Strip a famine-stricken area, amid the rapid degeneration of the humanitarian situation in the enclave.
Addressing a press conference, he convened with the personnel of government operations chambers for emergency intervention in the Gaza Strip. Dr. Mustafa appealed to the United Nations system, with all its institutions, to immediately operationalize its mechanism and designate the Gaza Strip as a famine-battered zone.
He called on the international community to enforce the UN resolutions that prohibit the use of starvation as a weapon of war, urging all member states in the UN to urgently act based on their obligations under international humanitarian law and acknowledge the catastrophe and famine.
The Palestinian government will continue to confront the aggression and starvation against the Palestinian people, followed by steadfast action on the part of the international community to save lives and ultimately reach the stages of recovery and reconstruction, Dr. Mustafa underlined.
The Israeli occupation forces imposed an unprecedented blockade on the Gaza Strip, and 2.4 million Palestinians in the enclave have been left homeless after the war battered their houses.
However, the Strip edged toward the famine stage following the closure of crossings to life-saving humanitarian aid, especially after the resumption of the offensive in the enclave on March 18, amid international and UN warnings of the aggravating humanitarian catastrophe.
