Doha: Christian Atsu, Ghanian national team and former Chelsea and Newcastle midfielder, was found alive after having been reported missing during the destructive earthquake in Turkiye.

The 29-year-old, who plays for top-flight club Atakaş Hatayspor in Antakya, southernmost Turkiye, was reported missing after the earthquake collapsed the club’s headquarters.

The Ghana Football Association tweeted today that Atsu had been rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building and was receiving treatment.

Atsu was trapped alongside the club’s sporting directing Taner Savut, who is yet to be rescued from the rubble.

Antakya is located at about three-hours drive away from Gaziantep, the epicenter of the Turkiye earthquake that has so far claimed 3,419 victims, according to the Anadolu Agency.
