PM honours 72 teachers on World Teachers’ Day

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani honoured 72 teachers and school principals on World Teachers’ Day yesterday.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi and a number of senior education officials and dignitaries. 

Addressing the event, the Minister of Education and Higher Education said that following Qatar National Vision 2030, the Ministry is building an education system of international standards which encourages analytical and critical thinking, and develops creativity and innovation.

She said the education system will provide opportunities for everyone to develop their abilities through the best education and training programmes, enabling them to pick up their jobs and accomplish them successfully in this fast changing world.

The Minster said celebration of Teacher’s Day this year in particular carries a deep message that expresses the situation of education in the world as a whole. She noted this year's theme “The transformation of education begins with teachers” is in line with global trends towards the issue of the future of education after the pandemic.

“Recently, under the leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, we participated in Transforming Education Summit (TES) convened by UN Secretary-General in New York last month.”

She said Qatar contributed strongly to the summit by heading a regional and a national consultative meeting, and it came out with outputs that strengthened global trends in putting education at top of the political agenda of world leaders.

“The celebration of Teacher’s Day on October 5 every year comes to return a part of the favour to the messengers of knowledge, our teachers who are credited with what we have achieved today,” said the Minister.

“We tried in the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to see the impact of these teachers on our students so we launched 'My Teachers I Will Never Forget You' initiative for secondary school students.”

She said the initiative aims at creating opportunity for them to join us in celebrating Teacher’s Day by sharing stories about their teachers who left an impact on their lives and helped them develop their capabilities and creativity.

The initiative received a huge response. “On the very first day and within a few hours we received hundreds of stories carrying expressions of thanks and gratitude for their teachers, sweet memories and love for them.”

She said teacher is a cornerstone of building our human resources and the sustainable development and the knowledge economy are based on an educated people, aware of the challenges of the present with an eye on the future to ensure a prosperous life for future generations.

The Minister added: “Our national education system places student at the centre of its strategic directions without ignoring the pivotal role of the teacher in supporting these trends.”

She said the Training and Development Center at the Ministry is tasked with training and developing all parties to the educational process.

“The move aims at constantly upgrading and developing specialised competencies to keep pace with this era which requires continuous modernisation and development,” said the Minister.

Ali Youssef Ali Al Majed, the coordinator of social studies, in his speech on behalf the teachers awarded on the occasion, said the country joined the world in celebration of Teacher’s Day with pride. He said this is by honouring and appreciation of the efforts by teachers in providing quality education to generation after generation and instilling the value of education in them.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. 

A documentary film on World Teachers’ Day was played at the event.
