Asian Championships: Jihee, Yubin seal women’s doubles title

Lusail: World Number 22 Lee Sangsu yesterday created history by becoming the first South Korean man to win singles title at the Asian Table Tennis Championships.
In the final which took place at the Lusail Sports Hall, the third seed Sangsu defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yuan, the no.4 seed, in a thrilling five-games encounter 12-10, 6-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8.
In the semi-finals, Sangsu had defeated Japanese 17th seed Shunsuke Togami 8-11, 13-11, 12-10, 11-6, while Chuang beat the top seed Jang Woo-jin of South Korea 6-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-9.
Chuang took the first game 12-10 in under 13 minutes but Lee bounced back to take the second and third game. However, the number four seed quelled attempts from the Korean to close out the match in the fourth, as he levelled the score 2-2, pushing the championship final into a fifth set decider.
In the final game, after being locked at 6-6 Sangsu claimed couple of crucial points before closing out the match.
Women's doubles champions Shin Yubin and Jeon Jihee of South Korea celebrate after defeating Hong Kong's pair of Doo Hoi Kem and Lee Ho Ching 11-5, 7-11, 11-3, 11-4 in the final.
South Koreans also claimed the women's doubles title after top seeds Jeon Ji-hee and Shin Yubin beat Hong Kong fifth seeds Doo Hoi Kem and Lee Ho Ching 11-5, 7-11, 11-3, 11-4.
Jeon and Shin had comfortably defeated Japan's sixth seeds Miyu Nagasaki and Minami Ando 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 in the semi-finals, and Doo and Lee won against second seeds Cheng Hsien-Tzu and Liu Hsing-Yin from Chinese Taipei 11-9, 11-1, 11-3.
