PHCC organises training workshop ahead of launch of oral health care services for elderly

Doha: The Primary Health Care Corporation’s (PHCC) Oral Health Promotion and Prevention Department, under the Preventive Health Department Directorate, recently organized a training workshop for dental staff recently.

The Department visited the elderly as part of the plan to launch Ejlal Home Oral Health Care Services Program offered for the elderly, aiming to assess the oral and dental health of the elderly, identify and refer cases who need dental treatment, and provide health education to elderly or their caregivers to prevent oral and dental diseases.

The training workshop covered several topics, where trainees learned were apprised about the program’s objectives, the phases of the service plan, schedule of visits and the roles and responsibilities of Ejlal service providers as well as refresher training on explaining the provisioning oral screening process of the service and the schedule of visits.

Trainees also learned the Qatari etiquette, culture, and traditions of home visits, and how to manage challenges that may be encountered during home visits.

Trainees were educated on the age-related normal and abnormal oral and dental tissues changes, thus allowing them to perform accurate oral screening and to deliver oral health education for the elderly or their caregivers based on the elder’s oral health status.

Also some scientific topics were covered to understand the impact of oral health on elderly patients’ quality of life, and the connection between oral and dental health and the various body diseases.

In addition to educating trainees on the age-related normal and abnormal oral and dental tissues changes, thus allowing them to identify how to deliver oral health education for the elderly or their caregivers.

Lastly, the trainees learned how to refer cases in need of treatment on priority basis. This was followed by interactive questions and answers session and and later they had a discussion over the content of the training workshop with questions and answers.
