HMC's paediatric emergency centres see rise in cold, flu cases

Doha: In recent weeks, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)'s five paediatric emergency centres (PECs) have seen an increase in the number of patients presenting with cold and flu symptoms. 

According to Acting Chairman of Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Centres, Dr. Mohamed Al Amri, said there has been as increase in the number of children coming to the PECs since two weeks due to the weather changes. 

“We are observing an increase in number of children presenting with viral flu, which is common during this season of the year,” he said. 

HMC’s main Pediatric Emergency Centre   in Al Saad received 897 cases yesterday on the second day of Eid. Majority presented with asthma and pneumonia, according to Dr. Al Amri.  

PEC in Al Rayyan received 393 cases, the PEC in Old Airport area received 180 cases, and the PEC in Al Daayen received 132 cases.

According to Dr. Al Amri majority of patients were treated and sent home. 

The PECs are equipped to handle a wide range of conditions from chronic disease to critical illness. 

On the second day of Eid, the Ambulance Service transported 255 people due to medical and trauma conditions. 

It included 87 cases due to trauma, 11 road accidents and two people were transported by Lifeflight (air-ambulances) for medical emergencies. Most cases were due to  general body weakness, diabetes, and hypertension

The Emergency Department at Hamad General Hospital received approximately 375 cases and among them 52 were due to abdominal pain and 19 due to road accidents.
