As part of the country's efforts to cut carbon emissions, the Al Wakra Municipality is undertaking a new initiative to recycle electronic waste.
The municipality yesterday signed a cooperation agreement with Electronics Recycling Factory (ERF) to collect electronic wastes from across the municipality and recycle them safely to preserve the environment.
Under the agreement, ERF has launched a mobile phone app, also named ERF, which enables residents to communicate with the company to collect their electronic wastes — used computers, television sets, video games, cell phones, copiers, and other such items.
The agreement also aims at creating awareness of the menace of electronic wastes and ways to dispose them of safely. Yesterday's agreement signing event was attended by Director of Al Wakra Municipality, Mohammed Hassan Al Nuaimi; Director of Unesco Regional Office in Doha, Salah El Din Zaki Khaled; and ERF Chairman, Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulaziz bin Nasser Al Thani.
Addressing the event, Al Nuaimi said this initiative is one of the solutions that would reduce carbon emissions by collecting and recycling electrical and electronic waste in a safe manner to preserve the environment.
He said the agreement will also support Al Wakra Municipality’s initiative ‘Al Wakra on the Road to Carbon Neutrality’, which is one of the important measures put in place by the municipality to reduce carbon emissions in Al Wakra.
Al Nuaimi said the agreement is a golden opportunity to exchange experiences with regard to sustainable development and the frameworks for cooperation of all parties to achieve it. He said the agreement is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the strategy of the Ministry of Municipality on developing sustainable solutions that support the green transformation.
ERF Executive Director Hatem Al Hamayda said the factory meets international standards and specifications in its operation to achieve environmental and economic sustainability. He said advanced technologies, recognised locally and internationally, will be sued to ensure the safe and proper disposal of electronic wastes.
Al Hamayda said the factory also carries out awareness campaigns and programmes on the importance of recycling in order to maintain environmental safety. He said the mobile app was launched in cooperation with Al Wakra Municipality to facilitate the collection and disposal of electronic wastes in Al Wakra city.
