Doha: The Qatar International Regatta - Sail Qatar 2012 - will begin from today to October 6, the Qatar Sailing & Rowing Federation (QSRF) said yesterday.
Over 70 sailors from 15 countries have confirmed their entries for the event, informed Captain Abdul Rahman Arshad, Technical Advisor of QSRF.
Sailors from Algeria, Bahrain, Czech Republic, Egypt, Great Britain, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Libya, New Zealand, Palestine, Qatar, Tunisia and UAE will be taking part in the championship organised by QSRF in co-operation with Doha Sailing Club.
The organisers informed that seven female sailors will also be competing in the five-day championship.
The sailors will be competing in the Optimist, Laser 4.7, Radial, Laser Standard, 470 and Hobie-16 classes.
The organisers have also set special cash awards for girls in Optimist Class for the first three place winners of QR 1, 500, QR 1, 000 and QR 500, respectively.
The cash awards to the winners of Sail Qatar 2012 in each class are as follows:
Optimist, Laser 4.7, Laser RDL and Laser STD: 1st prize -QR3,000, 2nd prize - QR2,000 and 3rd prize- QR1,000.
470 and Hobie-16: 1st prize -QR4,000, 2nd prize - QR3,000 and 3rd prize - QR2,000.
Team Racing (optimist): 1st prize - QR2,000, 2nd prize - QR1,500 and 3rd prize - QR1,000.
The QSRF is also hosting an Olympic Solidarity Course of Sailing in Doha Sailing Club from October 7 to 13. Around 20 coaches and sailors from seven countries namely, Bahrain, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE will be attending the course, said Arshad of QSRF.
