Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has opened a new multi-storey power substation with parking lot having capacity of 270 cars worth QR155m at Hamad Grand Street.

“The parking lot is free for all motorists – citizens and expatriates for the time being but after a while it will be converted into a pay parking with a nominal charge,” said President of Kahramaa, Issa bin Hilal Al Kuwari while inaugurating the facility.

The project “Hamad Grand Street Power Station and Parking Lot” aims at meeting the growing demands of electricity and parking facility at a dense populated area in Doha Downtown.

The facility located near Al Fardan Building adjacent to Barwa Bank at Hamad Grand Street (popularly known bank street), Suq Area will solve the problem of car parking in a big way in the area.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Brigadier Mohammed Marafia, Director of Engineering and Traffic Safety Department at the General Directorate of Traffic, Sheikha Al Jefairi, a member of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) and a number of Kahramaa officials.

“The total capacity of the substation is 40 megawatts ampere and it will supply electricity to Suq Areas, Mishairib projects and neighboring areas,” said Kahramaa President Al Kuwari.

He said that the substation came into operation in May this year under the project of phase 11 for upgrading power supply network in Qatar in a bid to meet the growing demands of electricity due to infrastructure development of the country.

Speaking on the facility of the car parking, Al Kuwari said: “Six floors of the building have been dedicated for car parking that can accommodate 270 cars. The parking lot has been equipped with latest technology of international standers for security and safety. And intelligence system has been also installed at the facility to guide the motorists to free parking areas.”

Al Kuwari said that the substation was designed according to the urban development of the areas that lack plots of land and snarling traffics. The area has shortage of parking lots and growing number of visitors on daily basis to the service centers and companies operating there.

“Therefore, the substation was built at a multi-storied building so the upper floors could be used for parking cars as a solution provided by Kahramaa at crowded areas required heavy electricity load and witnessing huge traffic jam” Al Kuwari added.
