Doha: Brigadier Abdul Rahman Majid Al Sulaiti, member of the supervisory committee for the Shura Council elections, has urged citizens to use electronic platforms for registration in voters’ lists instead of going to the electoral headquarters.
The voters’ registration process for the first Shura Council elections began yesterday in all electoral districts and will continue until August 5, Thursday.
“We hope that citizens who meet the electoral conditions will register through electronic platforms as it is easier instead of going to the electoral headquarters, especially in light of this pandemic,” he said.
Speaking to Qatar TV yesterday, Brigadier Al Sulaiti further said: “After registration, you will receive a text message that your application has been received and that the preliminary lists will be announced on August 8, Sunday, while the final list will announced on August 22.”
Regarding the announcement of candidatures, he said that it is premature as “the citizens should not announce their candidature in the current period until they have gone through the stages of the electoral process as planned. Everyone must register in the voters’ lists first.”
“The applications for registration of candidates will start on August 22, Sunday and will continue until August 26, Thursday, and that the final list of candidates will be announced on September 15,” he added.
He urged social media influencers not to publicise any candidate until the commencement of electoral campaign stage which will start on September 15 and will continue till the day of the voting.
The day of the voting will be determined later by a decree, Al Sulaiti said.
Brigadier Abdul Rahman Majid Al Sulaiti explained that electoral procedures were carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to identify schools as suitable headquarters for electoral districts, and also coordinated with the Supreme Judiciary Council to select judges to head the election committees, which would supervise the voting process and announce the results.
“Coordination was also made with the Ministry of Public Health regarding precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus,” he said.
