International Workers’ Day celebrated

DOHA: The Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs yesterday celebrated the International Workers’ Day, to highlight the importance of workers in Qatar and in recognition of their efforts in the development and growth of the country.

The event was held at the Qatar Sports Club in the presence of Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, H E Dr Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi.

Hundreds of workers from various companies attended the event. The celebration was marked by awareness-raising activities presented by The General Directorate of Civil Defence at the Ministry of Interior, Qatar Red Crescent, and Primary Health Care Corporation.

It also included a review of the efforts made by the State of Qatar to provide guidance in the area of occupational health and safety at the workplace.

Director of Labour Inspection Department at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, Mohammed Ali Al Meer, stressed that the ministry organises this ceremony in order to highlight the importance of workers in the State of Qatar and in recognition of their efforts in the development and growth of the country.

Lt. Abdul Hadi Al Marri, Officer at the Civil Defence Preventive Awareness and Education, gave a lecture at the event. Al Marri stressed the importance of applying safety procedures at the workplace, for both workers and employers.

He noted that the commitment to follow the safety requirements contributes to maintaining safety of the workers physically, morally and psychologically because of avoiding the risks and all that threatens their life.

It also contributes to increase productivity and quality of work and reduce cost, because, reduction in accidents increases production and reduces the time loss in production.

He also said that the companies are obliged to offer safety requirements at the worksites and for workers, adding the Civil Defence Department conducts inspection drives to check that all companies are offering safety requirement related to fire.

Al Marri emphasised the importance of full knowledge of the safety requirements and their implementation especially by the safety officials at the work-sites, and to ensure the availability of all equipment for personal protection.  

He called on the workers to protect themselves by adhering to all safety procedures at work by wearing clothes that suit the nature of the work they do, and follow the signs that help them to work safely and secured.
